Dozens of protesters advocating for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict disrupted traffic on the Bay Bridge, linking Oakland and San Francisco, during the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum. The demonstrators, calling for an immediate end to the ongoing conflict, carried banners reading “Stop The Genocide” and “No US Military Aid to Israel.”
Law enforcement officers, numbering in the hundreds, worked to contain the situation, arresting numerous anti-Israel protesters and temporarily halting traffic on parts of the bridge. Demonstrators continued their chants for a free Palestine even after being detained, emphasizing their call for action amid the Israel-Hamas war.
The protest aimed to disrupt proceedings at the APEC summit and pressure President Biden to advocate for an immediate ceasefire in the Israel-Gaza conflict. Protesters resorted to unconventional methods, chaining themselves together through vehicles and lying on the bridge’s asphalt, covered with white sheets, as part of their demonstration.
The disruption caused significant traffic delays, impacting thousands of commuters during the morning rush hour. The Bay Bridge, a crucial commercial artery linking San Francisco with surrounding regions, experienced a backlog of vehicles, leading to delays lasting several hours.
Claudia Felix, a demolition remediation worker, expressed support for the protest’s cause while highlighting the inconvenience it caused to commuters. “It is a good idea because they are against a war, but I think they should protest in the city, not on the bridge,” she stated.
Vicky Hamlin, a retired construction worker, empathized with the plight of Gaza’s people, expressing a broader perspective on the situation. “I think what’s happening to the people in Gaza is so horrific that nothing that happens to us here, nothing that we experience is worth complaining about,” she added.
The demonstration reflects growing concerns and activism regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict and aimed to draw attention to the ongoing strife, urging immediate intervention and a cessation of hostilities.
The Bay Bridge resumed regular traffic after law enforcement contained the situation, allowing commuters to continue their journeys.
The disruption on the Bay Bridge underscored the urgency of the conflict between Israel and Gaza and highlighted the protesters’ impassioned call for an immediate ceasefire.
