The Israeli Air Force has introduced a new era in ground warfare by deploying the high-tech “Iron Sting” system, as showcased in footage released on Sunday. The system was employed operationally for the first time to target Hamas’s rocket launchers in the Gaza Strip, resulting in the thwarting of dozens of terrorists.
The innovative “Iron Sting” mortar munition, a 120 mm weapon equipped with both laser and GPS guidance, has a range spanning from 1 to 12 kilometers. This game-changing system, developed by Elbit Systems, was initially revealed to the public by the Defense Ministry, IDF Ground Forces, and Elbit in 2021.
The video released by the Israeli Air Force depicts a 120mm mortar precisely eliminating an enemy rocket launcher, underscoring the system’s remarkable precision.
Designed for deployment in a variety of environments, from open terrain to urban settings, the “Iron Sting” system’s precise targeting capabilities aim to minimize the risk of harm to non-combatants, as reported by the Jerusalem Post.
Elbit Systems, the developer of the system, stated in a 2021 news release that “its operational use will revolutionize ground warfare and equip battalions with organic, accurate, and effective firepower.”
Major General Omer Cohen, the formation commander of Maglan, emphasized the effectiveness of the “Iron Sting” system, stating, “Thanks to the precision, lethality, and expertise of the fighters, the Maglan unit in cooperation with the Air Force foiled dozens of terrorists with a variety of means, one of which is the precision IED Iron Sting.” He further noted that the unit has eliminated over 100 operatives within Gaza since the start of the conflict.
As the conflict continues to escalate, Israel has conducted air strikes in Gaza and targeted southern Lebanon. The situation remains volatile, with ongoing efforts to address the crisis and its humanitarian impact.
