A deeply unsettling incident of alleged “institutional racism” has surfaced in the UK, with shocking reports revealing that nurses tied a Sikh patient’s beard with plastic gloves, left him in his own urine, and offered him food that violated his religious beliefs. Despite the patient’s complaint, nurses involved were reportedly allowed to continue working, raising concerns about systemic issues within the healthcare system.

The disturbing revelations come from a dossier leaked to The Independent newspaper by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), the UK’s nursing regulator. The document outlines multiple counts of alleged racism directed at both nursing staff and patients. In response to these grave allegations, the NMC has initiated an investigation into the matter.

A senior whistleblower within the NMC has accused the regulator of failing to address “institutional racism” within its ranks for the past 15 years. The whistleblower contends that this failure has enabled NMC staff to operate unchecked while applying guidelines inconsistently based on their own discriminatory beliefs.

The report states, “Nurses accused of tying a Sikh patient’s beard with plastic gloves, leaving him in his own urine and offering him food he couldn’t eat for religious reasons were allowed to carry on working despite the man complaining about discrimination in a note on his deathbed.”

The identity of the Sikh patient and the hospital involved were not disclosed in the report. The whistleblower has urged the NMC to confront the alleged racial bias in its handling of conduct cases involving Black and ethnic minority nurses and patients. This comes in the wake of claims of “alarming” racism within the organization, an issue that was first raised in 2008.

The deeply concerning incident underscores the critical need for transparency, accountability, and comprehensive reform within the healthcare system to ensure that all patients are treated with respect, dignity, and fairness, regardless of their background or beliefs.
