“Travel Goes Digital: Finland Introduces World’s First Digital Passport”

Digital Passports Gain Popularity Among Travelers as Finland Leads the Way

Digital passports are emerging as a favored choice for travelers, with Finland taking the lead by becoming the first country to introduce digital passports for international travel. This innovative approach promises to simplify and enhance the travel experience, with several other nations following suit.

Finland’s digital passport initiative, launched on August 28, 2023, in collaboration with Finnair, the Finnish police, and airport operator Finavia, is currently in a trial phase at Helsinki Airport’s border control. Travelers departing from Helsinki to the UK now have the option to present a digital ID on their mobile devices instead of their physical passports. The Finnish Border Control has confirmed that this marks the world’s first instance where a digital passport is accepted in a genuine border control setting, offering a more efficient and seamless travel experience.

To utilize this digital passport, travelers must first download the FIN DTC Pilot digital travel document app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Activation of phone screen locking methods such as a PIN number, fingerprint, or face ID is required before installation. Subsequently, travelers need to register with the police at Vantaa Main Police Station’s license services, where a valid physical passport is presented to create its digital counterpart. During the registration process, individuals provide consent and have a facial photo taken for facial recognition purposes.

Once registered, travelers can use the digital passport at Helsinki Airport when flying directly to the United Kingdom and returning on Finnair flights until the trial concludes in February 2024. Before each trip, travelers must transmit their data via the app to the Finnish Border Guard 36 to 4 hours prior to departure.

Finland’s groundbreaking move is part of a broader global trend, with several countries either launching or planning similar digital passport initiatives. In addition to Finland, Poland, South Korea, the United States, and the United Kingdom are also developing digital passport projects. Ukraine, in 2021, granted digital passports the same legal status as physical ones.

Furthermore, Singapore introduced HealthCerts in February 2021, a digital health passport securely storing and presenting Covid-19 test results and vaccination records for travelers. Additionally, countries like China, Estonia, and Israel have implemented digital vaccine passports.

In India, on Passport Seva Divas in June 2023, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar announced the commencement of the second phase of the Passport Seva Programme (PSP-Version 2.0), which includes new and enhanced e-passports. This initiative aims to provide passports and related services in a timely, reliable, accessible, transparent, and efficient manner.

As digital passports continue to gain traction globally, they are poised to transform the way people travel, offering convenience, security, and efficiency in the increasingly interconnected world of international travel.
