A 37-year-old Indian-origin man, Gurvinder Singh Johal, was fatally stabbed inside a Lloyds Bank in Derby city centre on May 6, prompting a murder investigation and court proceedings against the accused. The victim, who had recently returned from a family trip to India, was declared dead at the scene despite emergency services’ efforts.
The suspect, identified as 47-year-old Haybe Cabdiraxmaan Nur from Normanton, Derby, appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court via video link on Wednesday. Speaking through a Somali interpreter, Nur confirmed his identity and was remanded in custody. His next appearance is scheduled for Friday at Derby Crown Court.
A second man in his 30s, initially arrested in connection with the incident, has since been released without further action.
Samantha Shallow, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for the East Midlands, said, “Following a review of the evidence provided by Derbyshire Constabulary, we have authorised criminal charges in relation to the death of 37-year-old Gurvinder Johal. Our thoughts remain with the family of Mr Johal at this time.”
Tributes poured in for Johal, with a family friend describing him as “a smiler” and “a good friend.” Superintendent Rebecca Webster of Derbyshire Police offered condolences to the bereaved family, saying, “We know that life will never be the same again, and our thoughts are with them as they begin to deal with their tragic loss.”
The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
