Israel carried out a large-scale airstrike campaign across the Gaza Strip early Tuesday, marking its most intense assault since a ceasefire took effect in January. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, the strikes have killed more than 320 people.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the operation was ordered due to stalled negotiations to extend the ceasefire. Israeli officials have described the offensive as “open-ended,” indicating that it may expand further. The White House confirmed it was consulted about the operation and expressed its support for Israel’s actions.
Ceasefire in Jeopardy
The attack has reignited hostilities after a brief period of calm during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Hamas condemned Israel’s renewed offensive, warning that it breached the ceasefire agreement and could endanger the fate of hostages still held in Gaza.
Egypt, a key mediator in ceasefire negotiations, strongly criticized Israel’s latest military actions, calling them a “flagrant violation of the ceasefire deal.” The Egyptian Foreign Ministry urged international intervention to halt the strikes and called on all parties to show restraint.
Global Reactions and Humanitarian Concerns
The United Nations’ human rights chief, Volker Türk, expressed his horror at the overnight strikes, which he said have led to a devastating civilian toll. He emphasized that a political resolution is the only way forward and urged for an immediate end to hostilities.
“The last 18 months of conflict have proven that a military path will not resolve this crisis,” Türk stated. He also renewed calls for the release of all hostages held by Hamas, as well as individuals detained arbitrarily.
Hostage Families Demand Action
As fighting escalates, families of hostages held in Gaza have called for a protest outside Israel’s parliament, warning that renewed military action could further endanger their loved ones.
“With each passing day, the danger to the hostages grows. Military pressure could further endanger their lives,” said the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, an organization representing relatives of those held captive.
