A suspected gas explosion at a beachside resort in Maui, Hawaii, has injured seven people, including three in critical condition, authorities confirmed. The explosion occurred on Thursday night in the grill area of The Whaler on Kaanapali Beach, a popular tourist destination lined with hotels, timeshares, and rental properties.
Explosion Near Resort Pool Scatters Debris
The explosion, which was caught on video and widely shared on social media, happened outdoors near a swimming pool. Debris from the blast was scattered near the beach, though authorities assured that surrounding areas did not require evacuation.
The Maui Police Department stated that preliminary investigations suggest liquefied petroleum gas, used to supply barbecue grills in the resort’s common area, was involved in the incident. Witnesses reported a “possible grill malfunction” moments before the explosion.
Victims and Medical Response
The seven injured individuals range in age from 18 to 74, according to police. Two of the critically injured victims were airlifted to Oahu for advanced medical treatment, police spokesperson Alana Pico confirmed on Friday
The exact cause of the explosion remains under investigation. Authorities, including fire officials, continue to assess the extent of damage and safety risks at the resort.
The incident comes nearly a year after a devastating wildfire destroyed much of nearby Lahaina, adding to concerns about safety and emergency preparedness in the region.
