At least one person was injured, and critical infrastructure was damaged in overnight Russian drone attacks on Ukraine, officials reported on Sunday. The strikes ignited a fire in the southern city of Mykolaiv and damaged residential properties in the Kyiv region.
According to Ukraine’s military, Russia launched 143 drones overnight. Ukrainian air defense forces successfully shot down 95 of them, while 46 failed to reach their intended targets due to electronic countermeasures.
Damage in Mykolaiv and Kyiv
Mykolaiv Governor Vitaliy Kim confirmed that a fire broke out in a critical infrastructure facility due to the attack but was swiftly contained. However, details regarding the specific infrastructure that was hit remain unclear. Additionally, five apartment buildings, as well as several shops and offices, sustained damage from falling drone debris.
In the Kyiv region, multiple houses were damaged in a drone strike, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
Zelenskyy Calls for More Air Defense Support
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reiterated his plea to Western allies for additional air defense systems. He emphasized that Russia continues to control 20% of Ukraine’s territory and is making gradual advances in the eastern regions.
Citing military data, Zelenskyy revealed that Russia had launched approximately 1,220 aerial bombs, over 850 drones, and more than 40 missiles into Ukrainian-controlled areas over the past week.
While both Ukraine and Russia deny targeting civilians, Ukraine insists that intensified air defense support is necessary to counter Russian aggression.
Geopolitical Tensions Rise
Zelenskyy urged global leaders to take a stronger stance against Russia. “Europe and the world must be better protected from such evil and prepared to confront it,” he said on Telegram. He also called for continued pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin, stressing that a just and lasting peace can only be achieved through international unity.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump stirred controversy this week by holding a call with Putin without prior consultation with European allies or Ukraine. His Ukraine envoy later stated that Europe would not be included in Washington-led peace talks.
