Pope Francis Hospitalized for Bronchitis Treatment After Struggling to Speak

Pope Francis was hospitalized on Friday after reportedly struggling to speak during a morning meeting, the Vatican confirmed. The 88-year-old pontiff has been battling bronchitis for more than a week and was admitted to the Policlinico Agostino Gemelli hospital in Rome for diagnostic tests and continued treatment.

According to a Vatican statement, Francis’ condition requires medical supervision in a hospital setting. As a result, he will not participate in Sunday’s Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica. Additionally, a scheduled public audience on Saturday and a visit to Rome’s Cinecittà film studios on Monday have been canceled.

Ongoing Health Concerns

Pope Francis first mentioned his health struggles earlier this month, telling pilgrims he had a “strong cold.” The Vatican later clarified that he was suffering from bronchitis. This marks yet another health challenge for the pope, who has faced recurring illnesses in recent years.

As a young adult, Francis developed pleurisy, a condition that led to the partial removal of one of his lungs. In recent months, he has been prone to lung infections and has suffered two falls at his Vatican residence—one in December that resulted in a bruised chin and another in January that injured his arm.

His recent difficulties with speaking have also been noticeable. During his weekly audience on Wednesday, he admitted, “I cannot yet read my own speeches,” but optimistically added, “I hope that next time I can.”

Maintaining a Busy Schedule

Despite his health struggles, Pope Francis has remained active, continuing his duties and traveling internationally. Last September, he completed a 12-day tour across Southeast Asia and Oceania, the longest trip of his papacy.
