At least 40 people were killed and 60 others injured in an Israeli airstrike on a tent camp for displaced Palestinians in southern Gaza, according to Gaza’s Civil Defence. The attack occurred early Tuesday morning in the al-Mawasi area of Khan Younis, targeting a camp that housed those displaced by ongoing conflicts.
The airstrike hit at least 20 tents in the encampment, which had been designated a “safe zone” by the Israeli army during its ground invasions of Khan Younis and Rafah. Witnesses reported fires burning and Israeli reconnaissance planes flying overhead. Rescuers discovered craters up to 9 meters (30 feet) deep at the site while searching for survivors.
Gaza’s Civil Defence described the attack as one of the “most heinous massacres” of the current conflict. The wounded include women and children, with rescue teams working to recover both the deceased and the injured from the devastated area.
In response, Israeli authorities claimed the strike targeted a command and control center used by Hamas, accusing the group of operating from within the humanitarian zone in Khan Younis. The Israel Foreign Ministry stated that steps were taken to minimize civilian casualties, including precise munitions and aerial surveillance.
Hamas has refuted these claims, asserting that no fighters were present in the targeted area and accusing Israeli authorities of fabricating justifications for their actions. The group condemned the attack as a blatant crime against civilians.
