In a bizarre and alarming medical case, a 58-year-old man from Henan Province, China, endured several days of excruciating pain and discomfort after unknowingly inhaling a cockroach while he was asleep. The incident, which occurred in Haikou, has left many shocked after the full extent of the situation came to light.
The man, identified only as Haikou, woke up one morning with the unsettling sensation of something crawling into his nose and down his throat. Initially dismissing the strange feeling, he continued with his day. However, over the next three days, he noticed worsening symptoms, including particularly foul breath and the development of a persistent cough that produced yellow sputum.
Despite his growing discomfort, Haikou delayed seeking medical help until the symptoms became too severe to ignore. He then visited an ENT specialist at Hainan Hospital, who examined his upper respiratory tract but failed to detect anything unusual. Unsatisfied and convinced something was still wrong, Haikou sought a second opinion.
Dr. Lin Ling, a respiratory and critical care physician, took the case seriously and conducted a chest CT scan, which revealed a shadow in the posterior basal region of the right lower lobe, indicating a foreign object had become lodged in his lung. Based on the findings, Dr. Lin recommended an immediate bronchoscopy to remove the suspected obstruction.
What they discovered during the procedure shocked everyone. “During the operation, I clearly saw something with wings in the bronchus,” Dr. Lin explained to Seehua.com. “The foreign body was wrapped in a lot of phlegm. After sucking out the surrounding phlegm, the foreign body was exposed – it was a cockroach.”
The cockroach, which had been sitting in the patient’s lung for several days, was successfully removed. Dr. Lin thoroughly cleaned the area to eliminate any remaining secretions. Following the procedure, Haikou’s condition improved significantly. His cough diminished, and his foul-smelling breath subsided, although a slight odor persisted for a short time.
The unusual case serves as a reminder of the potential dangers of foreign objects entering the respiratory system, even while asleep. Haikou’s swift recovery after the removal of the insect highlights the importance of seeking medical attention when symptoms persist or worsen unexpectedly.
