87-Year-Old Pope Francis Embarks on Monumental 43-Hour, 32,000-Kilometer Voyage Amid Health Concerns

In a bold testament to his enduring spirit, Pope Francis, at 87 years old, is set to embark on one of the most ambitious trips of his papacy, covering 43 hours of flight time and a staggering 32,000 kilometers (nearly 20,000 miles). The 12-day journey will take him to Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, East Timor, and Singapore, beginning next week, and is poised to be a defining moment in his papal career.

The journey, initially scheduled for 2020 but postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, comes just three months before the pope’s 88th birthday. It marks his 45th international trip and highlights his commitment to his ministry despite ongoing health challenges that have led to speculation about his potential resignation.

Recent months have seen Pope Francis grappling with health issues, including a lingering flu during Easter that forced him to withdraw from several events, bronchitis that canceled a planned trip to the UN climate talks in Dubai last December, and a hernia surgery in June 2023 that required a 10-day hospitalization. Despite these setbacks, Francis remains determined to continue his pastoral mission, which he views as a crucial part of his role.

Within the Vatican, there has been a mix of admiration and concern regarding the pope’s decision to undertake this demanding voyage. A senior Vatican diplomat noted that while the pope is confident in his ability to complete the trip this year, his capacity for such rigorous travel next year remains uncertain. The pope’s mobility has declined, and he now relies on a wheelchair for knee pain and sciatica, and uses an elevator to board the plane.

The Vatican has not disclosed specific health precautions for this trip, but Pope Francis will be accompanied by his personal doctor and a nurse. During his previous trip to Africa earlier in 2023, a fully equipped ambulance accompanied him to address any medical emergencies.

The pontiff’s determination to undertake this journey underscores his belief in the importance of travel as a means of spreading faith and connecting with people outside the Vatican. His willingness to push through physical limitations has been described as a demonstration of his “strength of spirit” by Andrea Ungar, president of the Italian Society of Gerontology and Geriatrics. Ungar praised the pope for setting a positive example for older individuals by remaining active and motivated.

Following his extensive trip across Asia-Pacific, Pope Francis will return home briefly before embarking on a four-day visit to Luxembourg and Belgium starting September 26. October will see him focus on the General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, shaping the future direction of the global Catholic Church.
