A viral photograph of Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa, who is currently in judicial custody in connection with a murder case, has ignited controversy and allegations of preferential treatment. The image, which shows Darshan seated on plastic chairs in an open area within the prison grounds, has raised questions about the conditions of his imprisonment.
The picture depicts Darshan, who has been detained in Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Central Jail, along with three other individuals. Darshan is seen holding a cup in one hand and a cigarette in the other, with a visible smile on his face. The other people in the photo include gangster Wilson Garden Naga, Darshan’s manager Nagaraj (who is also a co-accused), and Kulla Seena.
The authenticity of the image has not been independently verified by NDTV, but it has gained widespread attention and led to concerns about possible special treatment for the actor. In July, the Karnataka High Court had emphasized that all undertrial prisoners are entitled to a standard diet and facilities, regardless of their status or wealth, while addressing Darshan’s request for home-cooked food and additional amenities in prison.
The photograph has prompted demands for an inquiry into the conditions of Darshan’s detention. Kashinath S Shivanagowdru, the father of the murder victim Renukaswamy, has called for a CBI investigation into the matter. Shivanagowdru expressed his frustration, stating that the image suggests Darshan is receiving preferential treatment and that jail should not be perceived as a luxury resort.
Darshan is one of 17 individuals in judicial custody in connection with the murder of Renukaswamy, a fan who allegedly sent obscene messages to Darshan’s co-star, Pavithra Gowda. The murder occurred on June 9, with Renukaswamy’s body found near a stormwater drain in Sumanahalli.
