Russia has successfully intercepted a significant drone assault on Moscow, which occurred amidst ongoing Ukrainian offensives in Russia’s Kursk region. The Ukrainian attacks, involving 11 drones aimed at the Russian capital, were thwarted, marking one of the largest drone strikes against Moscow to date.
According to the Russian defense ministry, all 11 drones targeting Moscow were shot down. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed that no damage or casualties were reported as a result of the attacks. The defense ministry reported that a total of 45 Ukrainian drones were neutralized by Russian air defense systems during the incident.
This attack on Moscow comes as part of a broader Ukrainian offensive in the Kursk region, an area where Ukraine has claimed control over more than 80 settlements. The strikes align with Ukraine’s strategy to bring the conflict to a close on what it describes as “fair” terms, in response to Russia’s military actions since February 2022.
In retaliation, Ukraine has intensified its cross-border operations. Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk reported that overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday, a total of 72 air targets were detected over Ukraine, including 50 drones and a guided missile. Kyiv, among other locations, faced continuous air raids that lasted over nine hours. The Ukrainian military administration reported that falling debris from downed drones caused damage to a private house and disrupted power lines.
In recent weeks, Ukrainian drones have also targeted oil and gas facilities in Russia, with a notable attack on an oil storage facility in Russia’s Rostov region on Sunday. The resulting fire in Proletarsk was still burning as of Wednesday, according to Russian media.
