Mpox Virus Detected in Pakistan Amid WHO Global Health Emergency

Pakistan has reported its first cases of Mpox virus, previously known as monkeypox, in the northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, just days after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global health emergency due to rising cases of the disease in Africa.

The health department in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa confirmed on Friday that three individuals have been diagnosed with the Mpox virus. The announcement comes two days after the WHO’s declaration, which was prompted by a surge in Mpox cases, particularly in Africa.

Key Details

  1. Initial Detection: The Mpox virus was initially identified in Pakistan in patients who had arrived from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The virus has been traced back to these individuals, raising concerns about international spread.
  2. Current Status: According to the director general of health services in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, two patients have been confirmed with the virus. The third patient’s samples have been sent to the National Health Institute in Islamabad for further confirmation. All three patients are currently in quarantine to prevent further transmission.
  3. Global Context: The WHO’s global health emergency declaration follows significant outbreaks in Africa. Sweden has also reported a case of a new Mpox variant, linked to travel in regions of Africa where the strain is prevalent.
  4. Outbreak Statistics: Since January 2023, there have been 27,000 reported cases and over 1,100 deaths, primarily among children, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The outbreak has raised alarms due to its severity and the large number of affected individuals.

Understanding Mpox

Mpox is a viral illness caused by the Mpox virus, which belongs to the Orthopoxvirus genus, the same family as smallpox but typically causes milder symptoms. First identified in monkeys in 1958, the virus has primarily affected individuals in Central and West Africa who had close contact with infected animals.

Symptoms of Mpox include:

  • Rash: Often located on the hands, feet, chest, face, or near the genital areas, progressing to pustules and scabs before healing.
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Swollen lymph nodes

In rare cases, Mpox infection can be severe and potentially fatal.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and health officials are advising the public to remain vigilant and adhere to preventive measures. The global response to the Mpox outbreak continues to evolve as more information becomes available and as efforts are made to contain the spread of the virus.
