In a tragic turn of events, a Russian airstrike targeted President Volodymyr Zelensky’s hometown in southern Ukraine, resulting in the loss of eight lives and leaving nearly two dozen others wounded. The strike, which occurred on Wednesday, devastated the city of Kryvyi Rig, with rescue teams working tirelessly amidst the rubble to find survivors.
President Zelensky himself shared video footage from the scene, depicting the grim aftermath of the attack, with smoke engulfing a demolished building and rescue workers diligently searching for any signs of life.
Interior Minister Igor Klymenko provided updates on the casualties, stating that eight people had lost their lives, including two children, while 21 others were injured. Additionally, four individuals remain missing, adding to the tragedy and uncertainty surrounding the situation.
Kryvyi Rig, with its pre-war population of approximately 635,000, has been a consistent target for Russian forces since the onset of the invasion in February 2022. The city, situated in the industrial Dnipropetrovsk region, has witnessed multiple attacks, further escalating the humanitarian crisis in the region.
In response to the airstrike and ongoing threats, President Zelensky urged Ukraine’s allies to expedite the delivery of advanced aerial defense systems. He emphasized the critical need for modern air defense technology to safeguard civilians, cities, and military positions from future Russian aerial assaults.
