PM Modi to Attend G7 Summit in Italy Amid Global Challenges

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to travel to Italy this week to participate in the annual summit of the G7 advanced economies. This visit marks his first trip abroad since assuming office for the third consecutive term.

The G7 summit, to be held from June 13 to 15 in Borgo Egnazia, Italy’s Apulia region, is expected to address pressing global issues, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the situation in Gaza. Notable leaders such as US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau are among those attending. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is also slated to participate in discussions related to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Modi’s trip to Italy, though not officially announced yet, is set for June 13-14, during which he will engage in bilateral meetings, including with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. He will be accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra, and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

The Italian presidency of the G7 has emphasized defending the rules-based international system, particularly amidst Russia’s aggression in Ukraine and escalating conflicts globally. The summit will also address the Middle East crisis and its impact on the global agenda.

Historically, the G7 has played a significant role in shaping global economic and political discourse. Italy’s invitation to leaders from developing countries in Africa, South America, and the Indo-Pacific region underscores the summit’s inclusive approach to addressing diverse challenges.
