A magnitude 6.0 earthquake hit Indonesia’s Sulawesi region on Saturday, prompting brief concerns about potential damage or casualties. However, authorities have reported no immediate damage or injuries.
According to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency, the earthquake struck in the Sulawesi region, but it did not trigger a tsunami threat. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 109 kilometers (68 miles), as reported on the X platform by the agency.
The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) also confirmed the earthquake, estimating its magnitude at 5.9. Despite the earthquake’s noticeable impact, there have been no reports of significant destruction or loss of life as of Saturday evening.
Local authorities are continuing to monitor the situation, and further updates are expected as the region conducts assessments of the tremor’s effects.
Indonesia, located along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” is regularly affected by seismic activity, with frequent earthquakes due to its position on active fault lines.
